Important tool to use and understand in the World of Entertainment....Copyrighting!!!

Hello World! I'm back for another intriguing entry into the world of Real to Reel. Last week I was discussing formatting for a track with up and coming, North Carolina hip hop artist, Keyahna Shanelle, she posed a question about copyrighting her work and other questions about copyright laws in general. I explained to her that my main focus within the entertainment field was mainly film and video but I couldn't resist finding out more about a general topic that circulates throughout the world of entertainment no matter the specific industry of it.

So I began browsing and researching the world wide web and came across a few sites and podcasts from credible resources about Copyright Laws, Copyright Infringement, and Copyrighting materials within the entertainment industry. Here is some information on them for you to check out:

1. Duke Law Podcast - "Copyright Liabilities"
    Information on Ecology Lecture Services
    Professor Jessica Litman
    March, 30, 2007
    http://mediastream.law.duke.edu/mp3cast/03302007litman64.mp3

Within this podcast, Jessica Litman, a Professor at the University of Michigan Law School, speaks about   how Copyright Laws give the "freedom", which she calls "copyright liberties" to enjoy and not exploit copyrighted material. She also touches on the importance of having your work(s) immediately copyrighted not only for the protection but for the protection of generations' enjoy to come. She I gained the aspect and understanding that one's original work whether visual, audio, or print must be protected with for the importance of history and science.

2. Entertainment Law Update Request - "Monkeying around with Copyright Law"
    Gordon Firemark, Esq.
    August 19, 2011
    http://www.entertainmentlawupdate.com/2011/08/elu-episode-023-monkeying-around-with-  copyright-law/

In this particular podcast, the speakers, Mr. Firemark, Esq. and Ms. Bennett, discuss past (actual) cases as examples of copyright laws being enforced, copyright infringement, and other possible issues with copyrighting. The cases give clear and informative examples of how the copyright laws and practices apply within the world of entertainment on many different (artist, management and executive) levels. This podcast definitely gave a sense of insight as what to be mindful of as I enter the business and entertainment industries. I have to ensure that I protect my work(s) as well as research any possible similarities of my business plans and structures to others to better protect my assets as well as my investors.

3. Intellectual Property Colloquium - "Copyright Termination"
Doug Litchman, UCLA School of Law
    http://www.ipcolloquium.com/Programs/13.html

Within this podcast, Peter Menell, Professor of UC Berkeley, and David Nimmer, author and copyright guru, discuss the practices of modern day copyrighting. The speakers give an historical account of the development of copyrighting and its changes and practices from past to present (which most wouldn't know has not been around that long). Included within the discussion was the topic of "termination rights" ,which was very new to me, of copyrighted work(s) and how the author possess the rights to terminate the contract of copyright 35 years after the contract has been signed to sell their work(s) if desired. (Side note: Any work that is copyrighted is protected for the life of the original author plus 70 years.)

Final Thought:

These podcast are very informative and will hopefully answer your questions about copyrighting as they did my own. So I will now be taking my newfound information back to my friend and hopefully give her better understanding for protecting her work(s) as well as my own. The questions that I had over the years as far as copyrights go have been cleared up and now I will use them to build a stronger foundation for my business plan, strutcure and dealings.

Until the next time...this is KB and this has been Real to Reel.

Read All About It...Unseen legalities within Entertainment!

So I am sitting here reading up on my daily gossip for the day and I run across a few articles about about some of our beloved stars and programs. Seems that they have been in a little trouble recently and are working out their legalities. So let's take a look at a few stories that I ran past today:

1) "Sesame Street" Composer Pleads Not Guilty to Child Porn Chargers

Now this story hits home as being part of a generation that grew up on Sesame Street. One of the composers for the grammy-award winning Sesame Street plead "not-guilty" to producing, possessing,  and distributing pornography of a 4-year old child. The composer, Fernando Rivas, is currently under house arrest. Rivas was arrested in April 2011 after photos of the 4-year old being restrained "bondage-style" were discovered. Rivas admitted to having sent those photos to two other persons.

Now as much as I love "Sesame Street" growing up and still love it for my children...this seriously needs to be handled as quick as possible and in a discreet manner to save its reputation.

2) Rihanna's "We Found Love" Video Banned In France

So once again (and I mean this in a daily sense) Rihanna is in the headlines of recent Entertainment news, blogs, and vlogs. So Ms. Rihanna has put out another racy music video that has caught the attention of France. The French censors have made this decision based on the "self-destructive" behavior they feel the video contains. The Supreme Audiovisual Council of France have ruled the video to only be shown after 10pm due to its explicitness. This video will be the second video for Rihanna within recent months to have been banned. Her video for "S&M' had been banned in 10 other countries besides France in earlier months.

Now I am honestly not sure that Rihanna and her record company actually cares for other countries banning her music videos because her career seems to be built off of controversy.

3) Wesley Snipes Sued Over Credit Card Debt

Wesley Snipes is once again in financial trouble and having to face a credit card company in dispute of repayment for $30,000 in unpaid charges. He is currently serving a 3 year sentence for tax evasion. American Express, who has filed this lawsuit, attempted to recover their money prior to Mr. Snipes sentencing. They are now wanting to recover their owed monies in addition to associated legal fees.

I am no celebrity but I do know that your name is like credit within the Entertainment Industry and like credit you want to ensure that you keep your name in good standings. This is not a good example of keeping your name, finances and/or credit in good standing and this will follow him for quite some time.

Resource: http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2011/11/21/wesley_snipes_sued_over_credit_card_de

These are just a few of the many legalities that are currently going on within the Entertainment Industry. Hopefully I brought light to few situations that you may or may not have known were occurring. So hopefully I have enlightened you minds on a different sector of the Entertainment Industry.

Where in the World is Andre 3000? (OutKast for that matter)

Now for all of my OutKast and "Andre 3 Stacks" fans, have any of you been wondering why Mr. Benjamin has not been on any of the music videos for songs that he has lent his lyrical genius? Well after a lot of pondering and asking various family members and friends of mine I think I have finally found a few possible answers. I have checked various sites, blogs, and social media networks looking for answers to this mystery as well.

Now for those of you unfortunate souls that do not know of Andre 3000 or OutKast, let me give you a little background information to bring you up to speed. OutKast is a hip-hop duo, consisting of Big Boi and Andre 3000, out of East Point, Georgia that was signed to LaFace Records as their first hip-hop group in 1992. (Side note: They were called "2 Shades Deep" and the "Misfits" before officially changing it to OutKast due to those names previously being taken...Let's be happy that happened!!!) Each member of OutKast has their own style of lyricism, hence the moniker "The Pimp and The Poet".

OutKast went on to form the Dungeon Family with close friends and label mates; Organized Noize and Goodie MOB. In 1992, they would also initially be heard on another label mate's hit; TLC's remix for "What about your friend's". In 1993, OutKast would release their debut single, Player's Ball, which would go on to top the BillBoard charts. Afterwards, OutKast would go on to release 6 albums, be nominated for countless awards, and win the majority of those that they were nominated for. Their efforts would influence amplified "southern hip-hop" and it various artists to follow. Big Boi and Andre 3000 have gone to establish successful collaborations as well as solo projects. Both members of the duo have gone on to emerge themselves as successful actors with numerous titles under their belts.

Now that we have the introduction out of the way, let's get to the business at hand. Why in the world has Andre 3000 not been appearing in music videos of songs that he has been featured in? Well it was initially speculated that Andre had issues with those particular artist. Well this was not true! It was also speculated that his management company, Family Tree Entertainment, and his manager, Michael "Blue" Williams wouldn't allow him to appear due to contractual reasons. It was also stated that Andre did not want to apear in any other artist's video before appearing in Big Boi's solo efforts (if this is true...talk about loyalty). Whatever the case may be...I would like to extend a request to "Mr. 3 Stacks" from myself and the rest of his fans by stating that we are definitely ready for some overdue lyrical mastery. The same goes for Big Boi "Daddy Phat Sacks", we are checking for your music as well to be on the racks and on iTunes.

All of this speculation brings the old saying to mind..."The world may never know".

This has been another Real to Reel word provided by yours truly.

XM5 Music Management: Right place, Right Time, Right People

            (Photo contributed)

This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Renata Smith, CEO and Founder, of XM5 Music Management.  Smith currently manages XM5 Music Management, an independent artist management firm, out of her native state of North Carolina. XM5 MM strives to manage, inspire, and educate as well as develop independent artist within a struggling industry.
As I spoke with Smith, I not only was given information about her company, but also received much needed insight on the dire state of the music industry, and how it motivates her daily.  Check out this snippet of our interview:

KB:  Why did you feel the need to start XM5 MM?
Smith:  Basically to groom the artist for the music industry which is struggling right now.

KB:  I’ve noticed.  Is that what drove you in your creation of XM5?
Smith:  Well…before the creation of XM5 I was an artist myself.

KB:  So you definitely have a first hand account of the in-and-outs factors within the music industry from a management side and an artist side.

Smith goes on to educate me as well as inform me that, “No one is buying music due to the piracy movement.”  Smith also speaks about the fact that the music industry started to take a downfall in 1999 and continuously drop 8%-9% every year there after.  She goes on to speak about the truths from a consumer standpoint to which we can all relate.  The fact that “people are tired, of buying junk (music) and/or want to invest their money into music/artist that is worthwhile.  Also that it is much more convenient to buy songs you want for 99 cents rather than purchase and entire album where you may end up feeling as if you wasted money after initially listening to it.

When asked about the present state of artist management, Smith informed me that more artist (even those that are or have been well-known) are becoming independent as well as taking on other ventures such as acting, fashion, etc. to have longevity with the Entertainment Industry (to basically cut out the middle man i.e. Record Companies).  In addition to becoming independent, artists are “maximizing distribution deals” to keep majority control of their product and heavily touring to make additional monies outside of record sales within the music industry.

Smith currently represents up-and-coming Hip Hop and R&B artist Lady Capone (known to the industry as "The Lady"), which by the sound of her product will become a household name among popular female artist and an addition to purely talented Lyricists within the music industry very soon! Believe that I checked out the talent thoroughly before stating this truth. With the motivating knowledge of Renata Smith plus the “sharp lyrical intelligence” that Lady Capone carries with her, both are surely set to be in your ears and in your minds…if they haven’t reached you already. They are also blazing a path of success for not only women but also for the Manager/Artist relationships and its product within the Entertainment (Music) Industry.

In the immortal words of Ms. Renata Smith, the music industry is “lacking very heavy.”  I concur with her on this because we have lost the feeling of consciousness and awareness that music once had and traded if for party anthems given by one-hit wonders (most looking for a quick payday). Glad to see that there are people striving to pertain the pureness of music.

Real to Reel: Interview with "Lucky" of Wet Dreamz Promotions

Interview with "Lucky" of Wet Dreamz Promotions

Ok ladies and gents…I had the pleasure of sitting down for an interview with Mr. Stuart Bynes of Wet Dreamz Promotionz, Inc. of Charlotte, NC. Mr. Bynes or better yet “Lucky” (which he asked me to call him) is the Founder and CEO of an primarily hip-hop, rap, and rhythm and blues genre parties and events and private entertainment promotion company that is primarily based out of Charlotte, NC with plans to branch out nationally by the end of this year. So with interviewing him on a professional manner, I was able to dive into his business realm and get the inside scoop on how he wheels and deals in the negotiation realm of his business.

KB: Mr. Bynes, I want to thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

Lucky: It’s cool….I had time to do it but just call me “Lucky”.

KB: Well ok Lucky. First of all, I have to ask how did you come about a name like that?

Lucky: Well we’ll just say it definitely fits my persona and it came about while doing my time in the US Marines.

KB: Ok, I definitely hear you Lucky and I must say that I also did my time in the Armed Forces for the US Army.

Lucky: Cool! Well you definitely know that a lot of situations we dealt with resulted in so-called “Lucky” results and I had a LOT of them! (Laughs)

KB: I definitely feel you! (Laughs) Well let me get this interview underway so I don’t take up too much of your time.

Lucky: Cool! (I see he says that a lot)

KB: So Lucky, how did you come about getting into the promoting game?

Lucky: Well it came about in a way that I honestly didn’t even think it would happen.

KB: What do you mean?

Lucky: Well I love clubs and parties. Everything about them; from the crowds of people and the way that they are enjoying themselves and all the factors surrounding it.

KB: Ok. Definitely understand that. So you would say that your love of clubbing inspired your now promoting of parties?

Lucky: No. It wasn’t just that. It actually came one night when a friend asked me to help him with his birthday party. He wanted the club where he was having it packed, especially with females, and I did my thing. The rest is history I guess because it popped off with a major bang and people loved it. My boy spread my name throughout the “Queen City” (Charlotte, NC) and next thing I know I was promoting parties for everyone from local celebrities to athletes and everyone in between.

KB: Alright, so they definitely call you “Lucky” for a reason.

Lucky: Yea and I embrace it.

KB: Well let me get into reason of the interview and why I wanted to sit down and speak with you.

Lucky: Ok shoot.

KB: I want to know how you negotiate with your clients. How do you get the result that you want out of the deals that you have when you negotiate with your clients?

Lucky: Well first of all, you must remember that every deal is an opportunity to exceed your business. Not saying that they will always be easy. Promoting is a hard game just as any other aspect in entertainment.

KB: Can you explain?

Lucky: Ok, well I will say it like this. Every client is not an easy client to work with and some you can never work with or complete a project with due to difference of opinions.

KB: Okay. Well I definitely know you don’t want to approach a deal with negative emotions.

Lucky: Oh hell no! You want to stay professional and cordial at all times but definitely step up and speak your mind when you need to.

KB: I feel you. I appreciate that advice. Are there any other ways you negotiate your deals? I am trying to find out how do you get what you want out of agreements.

Lucky: Oh that’s simple. I am straight up and honest with all of my clients from the start. I ask them what they want and I tell them what I am able to perform. I let my name and work do the major talking for me. People know when they come to me for any type of promotion that they are getting quality work.

KB: So you use your status and role as a major player in the entertainment promotion game to help you to land more work and beneficial, mutual agreements with your clients?

Lucky: Exactly! It’s all about supply and demand.

KB: (Laughs) Ok. I definitely understand that.

Lucky: It’s all about giving the customer what they want and in return for me giving them that I get what I want.

KB: And that is?

Lucky: More business…more opportunity…and more money.

KB: Well I can honestly say that I have attended a few of your CIAA tournament parties and I see that time and energy was definitely put into them. Let me ask this though; why do you not promote yourself as much as your parties?

Lucky: Well because I learned that exclusive parties are where the big business is at and word of mouth is actually the best promotion tool and will always be.

KB: Enough said. I definitely learned a t lot from you and am grateful for your time this evening.

Lucky: Cool! No prob. It’s been a pleasure as well. Be easy.

KB: You do the same.

Well there you have it! I had and interesting and informative sit-down with Lucky of Wet Dreamz Entertainment. Also was able to get clear insight on his style of negotiating as well. Definitely check him out at this upcoming 2012 CIAA tournament week-long festivities and your next uptown Charlotte heavy-hitting party! I know I will be. Make sure to tune into these websites to check out any Wet Dreamz promoted parties:

Protecting our Children through Entertainment

I regularly check out out the Motion Picture Association of America website aka www.MPAA.org to get the latest info on the film industry. While skimming through the webpages of very useful and important information (especially to a film buff such as myself); I found a webpage titled "Parent Resources"(http://www.mpaa.org/parentsresources). Upon reviewing this webpage, it gave me a great sense that the MPAA is well aware of the dangers that lurk in our realms of entertainment. It is full of active links and up-to-date information that will assist parents in knowing what to look for themselves and their family. It is very refreshing to see that companies are taking to the time to provide information that will protect our children.

The listed resources such as Filmratings.com, which is the official site for MPAA film ratings, provides a full database of films and film ratings searchable by parents dating back from 1968 (birth year of the rating system) up until the current year. Parents are able to view information able the history and process of the film rating system for better understanding. It is very important that parents know and understand that every film and its advertisement submitted to MPAA must be approved by the Advertising Administration before being displayed to the public. There are also resources for parents in regards to Online Entertainment and Programming through the MPAA approved list (http://www.mpaa.org/contentprotection/get-movies-tv-shows) of providers and tips (http://www.mpaa.org/contentprotection/faq) for finding others as well.

Now I did find out some very useful information and resources such as WiredSafety.org, which is the world's largest online safety and help group. It solely gets its information from volunteers and the information that they provide. After taking a spin myself on the websites, it gave me insight on how to protect my children and enhance their safety while they are online. WiredSafety.org is comprised of five websites with unlimited amounts of forums that give an infinite amount of information and tips. Here are a few more websites and how they could assist parents with protecting their children from the wrong types of programming and entertainment:

1. www.pauseparentplay.org - dedicated to helping parents choose television, movies, video games, and songs. Endorsing members include the Girl Scouts of America, YMCA, and the Film/ Cable TV, music, and Video Game industries.
2. www.thetvboss.org/ www.tvguidleines.org - Provides information for all parents to be aware of what their children are watching and to be more actively involved. The MPAA is a proud sponsor od the AD Council's TV Boss Campaign.
3. Parent File Scan (Software) - this is a software program to assist parents in identifying peer-to-peer software on your computer and know what is going on with their computer.
4. www.ESRB.org - The Entertainment Ratings Board gives a rating for video game software and provides guidelines on video game advertising. The ESRB does the same thing for video games that the MPAA does for films.
5. www.playitcybersafe.com - Created by the Business Software Alliance with interactive resources to educate children, parents, and teachers about internet safety.

Well these are a few of the sites provided by the MPAA's resources for parents webpage. I highly believe that each and every parent should check out each website and save them to their favorites as references. With all of the dangers outside of the home that await our children, we sometimes forget about the dangers in our homes that are only a touch away.

Til next time....This is KB and this is Real to Reel!!!

Captain America...The First Avenger

Captain-America-movie-picture-2.jpg

So I finally am able to catch the long-awaited new member (or should I say "First" member) of the Avengers....the man himself...Captain America! We receive a visual insight of the origins of ole' Cappy. I must say that in this season of superheroes; that it was refreshing to see some ole' school superhero butt-kicking.

The story tells of Steve Rogers (played by Chris Evans), a weakling from Brooklyn, NY that undergoes a super soldier transformation to become Captain America. Funny thing about the transformation is that Chris Evans plays both "before' and "after" parts of the transformation thanks to CG special effects. Captain America was brought forth by the America Forces out of the Lost Project Rebirth to battle Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving), Adolf Hitler's head of weaponry and leader of terrorist organization, HYDRA. Red Skull intends to use tesseract technology or "magic" to win the war and dominate the world. Sidenote: Look and listen very closely and it MAY be a link to the THOR and future Avengers movie plot!!! Anyway, after Steve Rogers is created into Captain America the project and Dr. Abraham Erskine are lost to sabotage by HYDRA agents.

Afterwards Captain America is paraded around the US as a logo and character for war bonds. When visiting troops in Italy, his good friend Buckey Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan) and his unit are captured by HYDRA. Captain America goes against the orders of Colonel Chester Phillips (played by Tommy Lee Jones) along with British agent Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) and Howard Stark (played by Dominic Cooper) and fly behind enemy lines in attempt to rescue the captured soldiers. Sidenote: Being that Howard Stark (yes...Tony Stark's, Iron Man, father) is in this movie and plot...do we see another connection?!!! Well I definitely do not want to give up too much of the movie and familiar stars that we see within the film. This is definitely a must-see film and I recommend all super-hero (especially Avenger) fans to go out and see it ASAP!!!

I give this film 4 Reels and state that I am very much happy that this film DID NOT come out before the rest, which would have caused viewers to NOT LIKE the other AVENGER movies.

MY RETURN....Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2

Well I know it's been a minute since I have let you guys with a post, but after my move from NC to MD and having to get everything together; I'm BACK!!! So I went to check out the latest and final Harry Potter installment (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2 or HP7-2) to get back in to my moviegoing attitude back into gear. So why did I choose a 2.5 hour movie to get me  going??? Why not?

So here I am watching a movie that I am actually excited about viewing. Here we are after a full decade of J.K. Rawling's hit Harry Potter and the (Various Titles) and the amazement and wonderment that they have brought us. I know...I sound like a big kid right about now. Anyway, this franchise has gained so much during its tenure within the literal and film industries. It's latest achievement is that this HP7 hit $495 million globally. It surpassed the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince film which was the previous crown holder.

So now to the movie description.....We enter where HP7-1 (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off) where Harry just lost his little friend Dobby, whom just recently assisted Harry in escaping being captured and killed. Harry, Ron, and Hermione search for Voldemont's horcruxes (hidden enchanted items linked to his life and powers) to destroy the dark lord and save the world. They also discover secret about Harry's past and his presence at the school. This covers secrets and occurrences over the past 8 films that uncover Harry's origin. The film ends with the final battle between Harry and Voldemont and the future of the school of Wizardly and our heroes.

THis is definitely a film that is good for the entire family and adults (or kids) of all ages. I give this film a 4.5 Reels and has definitely ended on a good note.

Alexis Ohanian: How to make a splash in social media | Video on TED.com

Alexis Ohanian: How to make a splash in social media | Video on TED.com

Today's blog will discuss Alexis Ohanian's, co-founder of Reddit.com, speech on boosting exposure with the Social Media. He keeps the audience entertained with humor throughout his four and half minute speech while exposing very important information on "not being so serious" in advertising for a "serious" cause. He uses the example of Green Peace and their mission to stop whale hunting off the coast of Japan. During their advertisement to name their logo (mascot), Green Peace used social media to obtain help from the people in naming their mascot. After a week or so of voting, they officially used the name "Mr. Splashy Pants", which they weren't so fond of at first.

After a few months, "Mr. Splashy Pants"T-Shirts and other souvenirs were created, Internet sites posted pictures of the mascot, and even e-cards were created in commemoration of the logo. After the vast amounts of publicity of the name and the movement to stop whaling in which; Japan put a halt on the hunting of whales. All of this was great because it displays that a serious mission was completed by a "not so serious" action.

The speaker definitely related with the audience from the very beginning. His fast paced speak had the audience playing catch up but once they caught up and were drawn in....the audience was hooked. His humor and well-delivered information kept the audience well-informed and made the speech seems much longer than the given time. His presentation made we understand that by not taking things so serious that I am able to pass a serious topic off to people. He used the same information within his speech to deliver his speech. I really enjoyed the timing of the verbal parts and how it coincided with the slides that the speaker had prepared. More enjoyable was his tone and how he not only related to the audience but made them feel comfortable as he spoke to them.

Take a look for yourselves......

Bad Teacher...Bad Movie???

Bad Teacher Poster

Well I finally made myself go check out "Bad Teacher" and heeeeerrrree we go! Honestly some teachers just don't give an F. For example, we have Elizabeth Halsey(played by Cameron Diaz), a foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate middle school teacher. She drinks, she gets high, and she can't wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her day job. When she's dumped by her opera-officiating fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute named Scott Delacorte (played by Justin Timberlake). She competes for his affections with an overly energetic colleague named Amy (played by Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (played by Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

In my opinion this is another edition of "Bad Santa" and if you loved the crude humor in that film; you will surely love it in this film. It is definitely worth watching but I will honestly say to save your money and catch it at in a month or so at your local Red Box for that dollar. It will make for an enjoyable friday night movie at the house.

I will give this film 3.5 Reels and say "Keep it pushing"!!!

Summer of SuperHeroes: Bust or Not?

Now it has been an exciting superhero summer for some while there are an analytical few that feel that it has been a major fail for the Film industry. In fact, the superhero franchise this season has not had the ability to achieve the vast success of that which Iron Man and it's even better sequel has gained. According to Movie Talk, there are 5 reasons as to why this superhero season is tanking.

1. Too Many Men In Tights

Honestly I have to agree with this myself. I do love the sight of all my childhood superheroes coming to the screen but how many times are we going to see the world get saved? Do you ever wonder why in the films we never see another hero show up out of the blue (in response) to another heroes quest of saving the world? I mean the world is only so big and we have so many superheroes out here. It's just funny to think of Wolverine showing up to Green lantern's battle. Guess that the reasons for the multitude of Fake cities (i.e. Coast City, Gotham City, etc.) and alliances such as the Justice League, Avengers, and others.

2. Not Enough Young Dudes Going To The Movies

Now this should honestly be your target audience, but one thing you have to remember is that the 25 and  up club was the main source of the comic-reading audience before the adaptation to film. 67% of the "Green Lantern's" film audience were men but only 37% of those men were under 25. "Thor's" audience consisted of only 28% of men under 25, while "X-Men: First Class" consisted 46% for the same demographic. Men under 25 are definitely the most active moviegoers and have to accommodated to make these films much more successful.

3. 3D Is Dragging The Genre Down

Just like the rest of the Film Industry at this point, viewers are have grown past the 3D Fade and continue to view films in 2D Format as we have always. What is so crazy is how we are constantly pushed into viewing interested films in the 3D Format every week and how the Film Industry is continually spending so much money to convert the films in this format when honestly people could care less. Only people that honestly care are the children because they think the classes are so cool.

For example, Green Lantern added $200 million to its production cost to convert it into the 3D Format. Now do you really think that it will recoup those costs at the box office?

4. Superhero Stars Cannot Measure Up To Robert Downey Jr.'s Comeback

We all know the turbulent history that Robert Downey Jr. has had with drugs and run-ins with the law and the audiences expectations of a successful comeback is what has given it much more appeal that other superhero films. Not to say that any of the lead characters did any less of a great job themselves, but we all know "Everyone loves Drama". Also the fact that Robert Downey Jr. had something to prove. Having the comedic touch and good direction of Jon Favreau also added that appeal to a good script.

5. They're Called Second-Tier Superheroes For a Reason

Very few superheroes outside of "Batman", "Spiderman", and "Superman" have been able to establish themselves as a worldwide hit. "Ironman" has definitely shown to be a certified exception. Most of the films have achieved good success in the box office with the adaptation of the superhero films, but lost out dramatically with their sequels. For example, the adaptation of "Fantastic Four" did exceptionally well but "Rise of the Silver Surfer" only did 65% of what the original accomplished. Others films such as "The Incredible Hulk" and its many adaptations, have failed to have a great start or even develop a sequel.

In conclusion, the film industry needs to perform much more extensive research during pre-production to ensure that the right target audience is being accommodated.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Transformers 3)

Now here's the deal...I am only gonna give you a brief overview of this AWESOME Film because I want you to experience the excitement that I did at the premiere of the film last night without knowing exactly what you are walking into....SORRY!!!....but it's for your own benefit. All I can honestly say that this third installment to the Transformers is a very complete movie that is perfect for ALL ages and genres. I was already eager to see the film but afterwards I just walked out with a smile upon my face thinking that this was a very satisfying film.

"Transformers 3" has brought back our favorite characters (minus Megan Fox of course) as well as added some very fresh faces to the cast for both Humans and Robots.  So be on the lookout of Sam Witwicky (played by Shia LeBeouf) and Optimus Prime (voiceover by Peter Cullen). What's different within this clash of Autobots/ Humans against the Decepticons is the history of the war that we are informed of during the movie. Be sure to pay very close attention to every detail, which will be very hard while viewing the beautiful new cars that are able to transform, the visual wonderment of battle sequences, and the vivacious (Megan Fox) replacement of Victoria Secret Model, Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley. This is another exceptional addition to the Transformers Franchise and by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg.

I could not help to give this film anything less than 5 Reels for it excellence!!! Hell it's honestly worth seeing more than once and I'm already on my way!!!

Cars 2

(Photo Courtesy of Disney/ Pixar Animation Studios)

So here we are with Cars 2, the sequel to the Cars which was a 2006 Blockbuster hit by Disney/ Pixar Films. Been seeing promos for the Film for the past month and couldn't avoid seeing this movie after my children purposely laid the "Big, Brown Eyes" on me in order to persuade me to take them. Although, it isn't like I wasn't interested myself to see this film and was pretty sure if they didn't want to see it...I may have went by myself.

So here we are back in Radiator Spring with the old gang of Cars from the first film and enters in Fan Favorite, Tow Mater (played by Larry the Cable Guy) and his comical act. While performing his daily towing duties, he awaits Lightning McQueen (played by Owen Wilson) to arrive from his Piston Cup Race. Once Lightning arrives the two embark on their fun-filled summer plan. One night while having dinner, Lightning is challenged by Francesco Bernoulli (played by John Turturro) to race in the World Grand Prix. Lightning accepts the challenge and heads to Tokyo, Japan for the first of three races. Once in Tokyo, Mater becomes mistaken as an American Spy and is sidetracked on an adventure of international espionage.

This film is sure to entertain both young and old and those in between. So grab your child or even take yourself or a date and enjoy the movie. Before you leave, I will give this film 5 Reels and say that is another classic by Disney/ Pixar Films!!!

Mr. Popper's Penguins

Warning....Warning.....Warning....another flaky kid movie on the loose!!! Believe me this Post will be quick. My second kid's movie in two days and I am still unsettled by the money that i have spent on them but once again...As long as my kids are happy then I am happy (guess you can't tell by my tone right now, huh?) Anyway, here we go....

Mr. Thomas Popper Jr. (played by Jim Carrey), is a successful and driven businessman that pays much more attention to his professional life than his personal life. Enters six penguins that turns everything about his life upside down and for the better. Mr. Popper's penguins is another adaptation of the classic book written by Richard and Florence Atwater.

Now i will say that I still love Jim Carrey's humor, but this film definitely seems very close to that of "Liar, Liar". Only difference is the story line!!! This film was NOT disappointing but could have given much more. You are definitely taking your chances on viewing this one, but if the kids are begging to see then absolutely take them; if they are not then do NOT waste your time. Wait until it comes out on DVD!!!

I give this one 3 Reels and calling it a wrap!!!

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer

Now I had the displeasure of seeing a Film that I honestly felt should have went straight to video and been available at your local Red Box or Blockbuster kiosk for that $1 rental fee. So I have intentions of taking my oldest daughter to see another film, but she was intent on seeing The "Judy Moody" movie....so we went! Anything for the kids right?!

The "Judy Moody" wasn't bad but it definitely lack that substance that "Wimpy Kid" definitely has. Out of the entire movie, I only recognized two people! We have Opal (played by Heather Graham) and Mr. Todd (played by Jaleel White) to give this movie a familiar feel. Now I will state this is definitely a kids movie and that (from the laughter and reactions from my daughter) kids love this book adaptation film. I laughed a couple of times at Mr. Todd's haircut and even the way that Judy Moody's (played by Jordana Beatty) little brother, Stink (played by Parris Mostellar), spoke. Just be prepared to think of what you have to do for the week/ weekend or play with those newly bought apps on your IPhone or Android. I think that I enjoyed the time spent with my daughter rather than the movie itself as I should, so the money was well worth it.

I will give this film a 2.5 Reels and say that you should wait until it comes out on DVD and pick it up from Red Box or Blockbuster on a night when you wanna give the kids something different to watch.

Green Lantern: Newest Addition from DC Comics

I had the pleasure of witnessing yet another addition to our "Super-Hero" summer by attending the premiere of Green lantern. Although we can attribute this addition to DC Comics and the "Justice League" rather than Marvel Comics and the "Avengers". Little refreshing to see the comic-book rivalry taken place on the film format now. OK...I'm done with all the intros so let's jump into it. Now any Green Lantern fan such as my self know the history of the Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds) and how he became a Green Lantern. For thos that don't know....let me catch you up.

We start off by experiencing the Earth millions of years before it was formed. A group of ancient beings called the Guardians of the Universe used the "Green" essence of "Willpower" to establish and intergalactic security force, which goes by the name of the Green Lantern Corps. The provide security of the universe that is split into 3,600 sectors, with one green lantern assigned to each sector. The strongest warrior of the Green Lantern Corps was Abin Sur (played by Temuera Morrison) of Sector 2814. Abin  Sur defeated Parallax (ultimate being of Fear) and imprisoned him within the Lost Sector of 666.

Present Day, Parallax escapes from the Lost Sector and feeding on the fear of three stranded aliens that stumbled upon his prison. Six months later, Parallax continues his tyranny after having killed four Green Lanterns and devouring two planets. He attacks Sector 2814, where Abin Sur is assigned, and wounds him in battle. Abin Sur escapes the battle and crash lands on Earth as his life-force comes to an end. He commands his ring to find a worthy successor on the planet. Enters Hal Jordan.....

Hal Jordan, a fearless US Air Force Pilot whose only fear lingers from the death of his father during a test flight gone horribly wrong, is taken away by the power of the ring and dropped outside of Abin Sur's crash site. He is instructed by Abin Sur to take the ring, place it to the Lantern, and speak the Green Lantern Oath before he passes away from his injury. After eluding the government who has tracked down the crash site. After an encounter with former co-workers, Hal experiences the powers of the Ring.  He is then take to to the Green Lantern home base of Oa, where he meets Tomar-Re (vocals by Geoffrey Rush) and Kilowog (vocals by Michael Clarke Duncan). Soon after he meets Sinestro (played by Mark Strong), who expresses his displeasure about a human being chosen as a replacement for Abin Sur. After a quarrel with Sinestro, Hal decides to quit and returns to Earth.

All the while, Abin Sur's body has been taken to a government facility to be examined and studied by scientist Hector Hammond. During the autopsy, Hector is injected by a piece of Parallax's DNA that has laid dormant inside of Abin Sur's wound. Hector becomes mutated and adapts powers of telepathy and telekinetic powers. With his powers, Hector learns that his father, U.S. Senator Robert Hammond (played by Tim Robbins), has manipulated him into performing the Abin Sur's autopsy and doesn't have much confidence in him being his son. As the Senator attempts to leave a party, Hector attempts to kill his father by sabotaging his helicopter but Hal swoops in and saves the Senator and attending party-guest, including his love interest Carol Ferris (played by Blake Lively) by using his powers. Shortly after, Carol recognizes Hal under his suit and mask. Hal encounters Hectors as he kills his father and attempts to now kill Dr. Amanda Waller (played by Angela Bassett) before Hal comes in an rescues her. Hal experiences the power of Hector and learns that Parallax is in route to Earth.

Back at the home planet, OA, the Guardians reveal to Sinestro that Parallax was an original Guardian that desired to control the "yellow" essence of "Fear" against the advisement of the other Guardians. By doing so the Guardian has become the embodiment of fear itself. Sinestro requests that a yellow ring be created feeling that to battle fear is to use fear itself. Hal appears as Sinestro is speaking with the council of Guardians and tells them not to use the ring and asks for help in protecting Earth from Parallax. Hal is denied any help from the Green Lantern Corp. and left to defend Earth on his own.

Once Hal returns to Earth, he must save Carol from being harmed by Hector and his attempt to inject her with Parallax's DNA. Parallax appears and destroys Hector and begins his takeover of Coast City. Hal defends the citizens and lures Parallax away from the city and into the space. Leading Parallax towards the Sun, Hal uses the Sun's gravitational pull to destroy Parallax. Hal loses consciousness after the battle and when it seems that he with be destroyed by the sun himself, he is lured in by Tomar-Re, Kilowog, and Sinestro. He is later congratulated and saluted by the Green Lantern Corp for his bravery. Hal returns to Earth and tells Carol that he has to go away to defend his Sector of the Universe as a Green Lantern, but will never be gone.

Of course there is a little surprise after the end of the credits to ensure that there will be a sequel or maybe a continuing series of Green Lantern Movies. I guess you will have to stand by and see. So go out and enjoy this star-studded movie. I will give this film a rating of 4 reels and say that it is definitely worth watching for its action and Ryan Reynold's humor.

Super 8: Classic Format

I had the pleasure of experiencing a Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams classic this past thursday with Super 8. From all of the films that I have seen in he past month, I witnessed countless amounts of previews for this movie that I just felt I had to see it to see if it lived up to the hype. It felt as if I was going to see ET allover again for the first time.

After viewing so many previous for upcoming films, I was finally able to begin my journey into Super 8. We enter the fictional town of Lillian, Ohio (yes I checked to see if it was an actual city) and see 13 year old Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney) sitting on a swing in his yard just after a funeral for Joe's mother, whom was killed in a steel factory accident. After a brief incident between Louis (the man who took off from work due to drinking causing Joe's mother to pass away) and Joe's Father, we jump ahead four months later. Joe has settled back into his regular routine of life and his love for filmmaking.

Along with his pack of young, foul-mouthed, and hilarious friends (Charles, Tom, Preston, and Martin), Joe decides to make a horror film to enter into a film festival. Joe and his friends, along with Louis' daughter Alice (Elle Fanning),  drive to an old train station to continue filming. While filming, Joe notices that a truck has jumped onto the tracks and is heading towards the ongoing train that has begun passing them. After the massive derailment of the train after colliding wit the truck, the kids discover that the person driving the truck is their high school biology teacher Mr. Woodward (Glynn Turman) and is still alive. He warns them to forget what they saw and to never speak of it to anyone - otherwise them and their families will be killed.

After the kids evade being captured, the Air Force and their commander, Colonel Nelec (Noah Emmerich) they secure the train crash, Dr. Woodward, and discover that their were others at the crash.
Strange occurrences take place such dogs running away, missing microwaves, missing car engines, as well as missing people. The Colonel and his crew stage a hoax by setting a wildfire and forcing the city's population to retreat to a local Air Force Base. While there Joe runs into Louis who informs him that a creature has taken Alice.

Joe and his friends find a ride coerce a person to give them a ride back to town. After reaching the school and breaking into Dr. Woodward's collection of confiscated items, the crew find a stash of informative films, tapes, and documents. After reviewing all of the information, especially one particular film and tape, they discovered that the Government has captured and imprisoned and alien that crashed on earth in 1958. The alien was treated poorly when the only thing it wanted to do was simply return home. The film also showed an incident where the alien grabbed Dr. Woodward, which bonded the two; causing him to run the truck into the train earlier in the movie.

Colonel Nelec and his troopers storm the school while the kids are finishing the review of Dr. Woodward's materials and capture them. On the bus ride back to the base, the bus is attacked by the alien and turned over on its side. The alien kills Nelec and his men, while Joe and his friends escape the bus through a broken window. The kids return back to the city which is now under fire. They dodge through the city avoiding the incoming fire of military weapons, which seem to be out of control.

Joe discovers that the alien's hideout is located in the cemetary. After climbing down into the alien's subterranean lair, they rescue Alice and others and retreat to escape. The are captured and few are killed by the alien. I will end it here because I really feel that you should see this modern classic that J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg have brought to us. I am very refreshed to see a new idea among all the remakes that we have coming out presently.

What you have to appreciate is the classic horror format of the film. We are constantly left in anticipation of villain at hand and what "IT" looks like. We are given the backstory half-way through the film to alter our perceptions and begin to feel as sense our sorrow for what we actually thought was the villain. This is (AGAIN) a classic since of horror and science-fiction and a definite reason to get out of the house with  your mate or friend and sit down to a box of favorite concessionary food and enter another world for 2 hours.....ENJOY!!

I give this film a definite 5 Reels and hope to see more films of this caliber coming out soon!!!

X-MEN: The First Class

X Men First Class movie wallpaper poster 262x300 X Men First Class Movie Release Date, Preview, Cast,Wallpaper,Trailer

Now I was able to attend the Premiere of the latest X-MEN addition this past week and I was definitely impressed. "The First Class" definitely gave it audience what it needed and that was some "Understanding". What I mean by this is how is some of our favorite heroes and villains become the way they that we have seen them in movies since XMEN first began (outside of Wolverine, which I will still say that i am disappointed about...MOVING ON). We were left with a brief viewing of Magneto's beginning in X-MEN: The Last Stand in which we see him imprisoned in a Nazi camp as a young boy. Well "First Class" picks up where we left off in X2 and are able to get more familiar the origins of Magneto as well as Charles Xavier (Professor X),  Raven (Mystique), and Beast.

We are introduced the what is known as the first class of human saving mutants, which would later divide into what is now known as the X-MEN and the Brotherhood of Mutants, and the very first version of Cerebro (the machine Xavier uses to locate mutants). We see a young Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender) as they join forces to stop the Hellfire Club lead by Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon) and Emma Frost (January Jones). This is where the X-MEN are rebooted and we find out where the relationship/ friendship of Professor X and Magneto turned into that of enemies and having different views on mutant relationships with the humans.

This film also gave additional insights on how the School for Mutants was started by Professor X, how Professor X ended up in the wheelchair, how Beast transformed from a regular man, and other important origins. This film is what we needed to bring a few gaps and answer questions from the previous series of X-Men films that we have seen.

I will give this film a definite 4 and 3/4 Reels and say that if you love the X-Men as a whole that this is a MUST SEE!!!

Thor: The Latest Addition to the Avenger

Sorry that it's been a few days since my last post so here we go!!!!

We are still in the beginnings of the AVENGERS epic in which many of us STILL can't name ALL of its members. So if you are looking for me to refresh your memory or name them for you I will NOT be doing so. Right now we are here to talk about THOR, The God of Thunder, that will be joining the Avengers soon so I guess you will just have to follow by blogs to get more info over time.

Now I will have to say that this movie has very much differed from its counterparts within the Avengers, mostly because Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth) is apart of a different Realm and World (Asgard) within neighboring galaxy to that which Earth is apart of. Now the film is full of history (backstory) that gives us an idea of the type of man Thor has grown to become and I can describe it in one word....ARROGANT!!! Man is this guy full of himself! He is so full of himself that he challenges his father Odin (played by Anthony Hopkins...fava beans anyone?!). Anyway Odin casts Thor down to earth without his mighty hammer by his side to teach him humility and live amongst us weaker humans.

As he learns his way and becomes peaceful with himself and his new surroundings, he falls in love with new friend and guide Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman). Thor learns that true spirit comes from within as he battles supernatural forces, treachery from loved ones, and lies that have been covered for most of his life. This is an excellent addition to the Avengers epic and cannot wait for Captain America to come out next month. So check back with me next in a month and I will give you the scoop on that one as well.

OH Yeah, as for my Reel count....I give it a 4 Reel rating. BE EASY and enjoy yourselves at the movies!!!

Mr. Ghetto's "Walmart" New Orleans Bounce: Display of Ignorance and Audacity

Now I have to address this "Walmart" song that is allover the Internet right now and has moved onto the official newsroom in many areas. I took a look at this video while browsing the www.worldstarhiphop.com  video blog site. So out of curiosity, I take a look and am amazed by the level of audacity that plays before me. Please feel free to take a look via Youtube before I continue...http://youtu.be/O1tufujnbzU.

LMAO literally...because I know that you are amazed by what you've just seen, right? Well I was too...believe me. Now I will admit that I am a man and I love to look at beautiful females and their bodies, but when you display them in an ignorant and distasteful way; that's where I draw the line! Now I am all for young black men getting out here in this crazy and unforgiving world and making a hard-earned buck or three but come on! We got females wearing next to nothing in family-frequented store and gyrating to a song that reeks of trademark infringement. Now many COULD compare this to the people to Erykah Badu's "Window Seat", which I have also included for your viewing pleasure...http://youtu.be/9hVp47f5YZg, and say that "this is another form of expression by being noticed and I will simply say in return that this "BULLSHIT". First of all, The two are nothing alike in the sense of quality and meaning. So.....NEXT! Now I won't go off the deep end and say that this has set our people back another 400 years, but will say that this is a blatant display of sexism and ignorance and that we must draw the line somewhere before this kind of mess(yes I said MESS) continues!!! I will say as a respectful man and father that this isn't something that our youth and women should be subjected to. I am sure that I will have many who will disagree with me but I as those will express my God given opinion as I see fit.

Now others have express their feelings for the video as well and I have included their video for viewing as well via World Star Hip Hop. So enjoy and check back with me for additional news on any additional Film/ Video turning heads.....this is your boy KB and I'm O.U.T.

Beware of STRIP POLES being sold at your local Walmart next week!!!!
